Summary
Mobile healthcare delivery of primary and preventative care can contribute to greater access to essential healthcare services in areas which lack essential healthcare, referred to as “health deserts.” The current healthcare ecosystem faces a distribution problem that can be addressed through the greater incorporation of mobile healthcare delivery and other notable changes in healthcare services, such as the use of telehealth, a focus on patient-centered outcomes, and increased attention to the role that social determinants of health play in those outcomes. When implemented correctly, mobile healthcare delivery can provide access to millions of patients who currently lack care, and, with innovative policy support, this can be financially sustainable for providers and health systems across the United States.
Relevant Foundation Activities
Driving Health Forward
The Leon Lowenstein Foundation supports Driving Health Forward (DHF), a nationwide campaign that seeks to scale mobile healthcare by connecting and convening a variety of community partners in service of expanding mobile healthcare programs of quality.
On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, DHF hosted its launch event, at which many key organizations and individuals attended to support the campaign’s mission. You can view a full list of the campaign’s participants here.

We Are Here: Lowering Barriers with Mobile Health
With the support of the Leon Lowenstein Foundation, the Mobile Health Initiative at the University of Minnesota (UMinn) produced a 35-minute short film that follows the mobile healthcare staff and volunteers of UMinn, their work, and its impact on their local community.
